Subject: The Pawn Stars #2 - Return Of The Pawn

Message:
This is the new thread for The Pawn Stars team discussions...so get posting. Go on..hurry up! Can't think of anything? Alright then, I'll start with some general Team News Etc .
*First of all we have a new team member, abegtrup, and because of his excellent aptitude with our Boringness Assessment Test, he has, by unanimous vote between Coach and myself, been given the distinguished title of TEAM SOCIAL DIRECTOR. What this actually entails we are not sure... but we are looking forward to it anyway.
*We also had a couple of Team Escapees this week - rubar10 and nicola1947 have left the line up.
*Eternal Rival odonata has made some feeble threats to our team on his own forum page and has also sent a Whole of Team Challenge which, unfortunately, I had to decline due our own player unavailability. We will deal with him later... but it must be said that plans for his overthrow are afoot. Check out the Team Website under " Coming Soon "
* About the Team Tournament - Coach will organise this soon in his copious spare time. So hang tight for that one.
Ok, it's over to you now guys .
Yours etc CAPTAIN xena

Greetings, salutations and good night...

Message:
Ok, so I'm the new guy...

For some reason - having been on the team sheer moments only - I was snookered into the
role of socializing a bunch of chess nerds... well I'm not one to turn down a challenge (er...
unless of course it'll ruin my rating), so let's begin!

----
First thing on the agenda: (Yes, so sorry, we have agendas now...)

We need to get a feel for our team members - and not a cheap feel either! If you'd all be so
kind as to introduce yourselves (via the forum page of course) we'll have a record for
prosperity's sake (i.e. we'll make all future members read through the endless forum posts as
punishment for not joining us earlier - haha!)

Keep in mind, we're not looking for the boring details like your name, birth-date, place of
residence, etc., we're looking primarily for credit card numbers, mother's maiden name, and
perhaps a special word or pass-phrase you hold dear...

Of course, if for some reason you feel it's too soon to share your truly personal details with
the group, then you can always tell us something a little less profitable, but still worth our
while... how it was you came to play chess.

Example 1. You were kicked of the cards server over at poker.com last week and you had to
find another way to spend your evenings...

Example 2. Grandpa helped you carve your first set of chessmen as a child, and yet, when the
farm fell on bad times, you were forced to sell them to buy milk for you favorite pet goat...

Well, you get the drift anyway...

I'd go first, but as your team captain, and a lady, I believe it should be Xena's honor...

Message:

As the latest addition to the meanest team on gameknot, i would like to first thank the management and say hello to my fellow pawn stars. After reading about the social director's plans, i felt i had to make an attempt to join the team as soon as possible in order to prevent future hardship.

How to Cook in Chess — Actually, "to cook" in chess has nothing to do with culinary pleasures. It is a dreaded word chess composers don't want to hear. A chess composition is cooked when there is a different solution unintended by the composer -- a dual solution. But a composition can be also cooked when someone creates a sound problem or study from an unsound work and eliminates the dual solution. You can also have it both ways as our story shows. Last year we published a chess study composed by Ladislav Prokes and Oldrich Duras, but as pointed out by Prof. Noam Elkies, the study was "cooked." Recently, we learned that a Slovakian player, Ivan Novak, discovered the same dual solution already in ...

THE NOT NEW CAPTAIN HERE

Message:
Thank you TEAM SOCIAL DIRECTOR New Guy abegtrup and Newer, New Guy arikan. Well you certainly won't get those really personal details out of me. I would be extremely happy, however, to tell you how / when / where I started playing chess... but I honestly can't remember. It must have been taught it when I was small Warrior Princess in the Backwoods of New Zealand. It has always been one of my Major Talents along with sword twirling and picking on people smaller than myself. I really need no introduction, though, because The Team is used to my daily ramblings but I would be interested in hearing from, not only the newer guys, but the guys that we never hear much from. That's my turn over anyway. CAPTAIN xena

Boris Gelfand and Alex Grischuk step up battle to face Vishy Anand — The favourites were eliminated, so two outsiders are competing Saturday in the candidates final to decide who meets India's Vishy Anand, the holder, in the 2012 world chess championship match. Israel's Boris Gelfand and Russia's Alex Grischuk play game three of their six-game series in Kazan. Gelfand, ranked world No16, is a 42-year-old veteran who has a career record of doing well in major chess events without winning. Grischuk, 27, world No12, divides his time between chess and poker and was only included among the eight candidates as a late substitute. But the Muscovite has knocked out Levon Aronian and Vlad Kramnik, the two prime favourites, while Gelfand eliminated the US chess champion Gata Kamsky ...

I wanna grow up to be like the CAPTAIN...

Message:
You hear that everyone? Our wonderful CAPTAIN is truly a bully at heart - wonderful news! I
for one am glad to know she's no goody-two-shoes, who's going to let those darn tooten Flying
Kangaroos (er... Zebras) get the better of us!

This is so inspiring that I feel the next thing on the agenda (no moaning - I can hear you!)
shall be to come up with a team fight song, a shared opening remark for all team games, such
as, "Pawn Stars are looking to Mate you!", and perhaps we should all pick out our own Flying
Zebra team member that we will constantly pick on, by challenging repeatedly and defeating,
until they are so morally crushed they desert their herd!

So, don't fall behind in your mandatory team chores... remember, first tell us your tear-
jerking tale of your youth, like when you had to beat the town's jester with the chess board, in
order to keep him from constantly mocking you over the way your mother dressed you... and
then wipe the tears from your eyes and revel our spirits with your rendition of our new fight
song/motto/catch phrase, that you - ever not boring, came up with!

Gelfand to Play Grischuk in Candidates’ Finals — The final two players in the World Candidates Matches in Kazan, Russia, were anything but expected when the chess event began. Alexander Grischuk of Russia and Boris Gelfand of Israel won playoffs on Monday to advance to the final, which begins on Thursday. Grischuk beat Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, a former world chess champion, and Gelfand defeated Gata Kamsky of the United States. Kramnik was one of the favorites before the candidates matches began, but he could not beat Grischuk in the regulation part of their match. He came close in the fourth and last game, until an oversight by Kramnik allowed Grischuk to escape from a losing position. From the beginning, Grischuk’s strategy seemed ...

Ok, so here is some information about me.

My name is Crusader, PawnCrusader. I am tall, strong, have dark hair and red eyes. I am the forbidden child of Loki and Athena. I was raised in the long lost Atlantis and had a quiet, peaceful life ‘till I got fed up. Then, I embraced the powerful arcane art of chess and started the quest for the ultimate chess duel. I love hunting ogres and goblins. My credit card number is 000666000.

Well, what did you expected? I’m just an ordinary guy with an ordinary story.

Chess: When going gung-ho doesn't work — Subtlety is often the key to unlocking pawn endgames. We continue our theme of pawn endgames. White may be a pawn up, but care is required to force a win. RB: It's tempting simply to go 1 Kb4, gobble up Black's queenside pawns and hurl the a- and b-pawns down the chess board to promote. But that would mean allowing Black to capture the two e-pawns and queen on f1. White would still have an extra pawn, but in a queen endgame it would take more technical skill than I possess to be confident of victory. So instead I'm looking at 1 Kd3 and 1 e4. I think both work, but I'm going to go for the immediate pawn advance because it has the added advantage of ...

Underdogs on Top in World Chess Championship Candidates Matches — The first round of the World Chess Championship Candidates Matches in Kazan, Russia, produced several surprises. The biggest was the elimination of Levon Aronian, who is ranked No. 3 in the world, by Alexander Grischuk (No. 12), whose recent play has been inconsistent but who prevailed in the tiebreaker games. Gata Kamsky, fresh off winning the United States title, produced another upset by beating Veselin Topalov, a former world chess champion. Topalov (No. 7) has not played much in recent months, and that hurt him. He was outplayed by Kamsky (No. 18) in Game 2, which Kamsky won, and in the last game, when Kamsky forced a draw. Boris Gelfand (No. 16), who will be 43 next month and ...

Life story of a begtrup

Message:
I was born at an early age... my mother ran out of pacifiers and decided that pawns might
work just as easily, so I had to share them with the dog. When I was old enough to fear... er,
respect my father, he taught me the true meaning of the little figurines - they were part of a
game, a game designed solely for the pleasure of my father to be able to continuously defeat
his son in a humiliating and emotionally scarring manner - it would be ten years before I
returned to the world of the black and white checkerboard....

In middle-school I tried desperately to avoid falling into the wrong crowd (the nerds), but it
seemed destiny had other plans, for I was cornered by the school bully and forced to play him
in a game of chess! If he won, he'd ridicule me in front of the other kids and take my lunch
money - if I won, I'd simply go hungry...

My fairy chess mother was with me that day, for I did go hungry, but I could at least keep my
head held high (in certain nerdy circles), for I had beaten that bully (intellectually) and with
that, all those horrible childhood memories seemed so far away...

I joined the chess club that very day, and fought tooth and nail (pawn and rook) for a full
afternoon; now a few hours later and a seasoned chess master, I returned home and
challenged my father to a game of B&W checkers. I beat my old man, and although I was
severly punished (sent to my room and forced to missed my second meal of the day, supper),
I had started something - something great!

The next day I went back to school and quit the team - it was full of nerds, and they were
crippling my social life, which I was sure would take off any day... Well a little over a decade
later, sitting alone at home, I decided perhaps I should give the ol' B&W checkers another go,
and here I am with my fellow Pawn Stars. =)

Message:
Dear All,

Her eternal and gracious, illustrious, superlative, superlative, superlative majesty Xena has
requested me to show my face on this forum and who am I to question, simply a lowly humble
pawn? (aren't we all?)

So here is a little information which has nothing to do with the bald, over weight, horrifically
meme'd trog sat naked at 4 am behind his keyboard.

Having been born the illegitimate son of one of the lesser Hapsburgs (a sort of back-stairs
sprog). I was raised by the cooking staff of the Vienna Boys Choir. There on the black and white
tiles of a grease covered scullery floor in my hand-me-down cassock I learned my art. Chess.
Well as close to chess as I could master with the limited collection of pots, pans and chicken
carcasses. The fact that the floor covering was 8x7 lead to my development of the half Russian
opening which was a classic against the rats, but a bit of a shock when I on my first day at
gameknot I discovered I was allowed 2 rooks. The chance to castle behind three pawns being a
revelation.

Since these early formative years I have grown and developed into a man. A pawn star.

so there you have it, sorry it was not as long as my BAT.

(I still have the cassock and it is available on e-bay if anyone is that way inclined)

Are we not Pawns?

Message:
Or, to put it another way, Social Dude and Token Austrian are quite correct, in life we are all born as PAWNS, but some of us are looking at the STARS. Until now I've been hesitant to post my so-called life story in this forum, since there has been so much written about me already, but now would perhaps be a good time for me to clear up a few points. Firstly, I do prefer the term "International Man of Mystery" to "International Fugitive from Justice." I would also like to add a few things here that were edited out of the feature story on me in last month's issue of "Pawn Aficionado":

Favorite chess book: "Every Great Chess Player was Once a Beginner." Beautiful book with very large printing and lots of cool pictures of cartoon-like chess pieces killing each other horribly and stuff. Also, it's a big book, so very useful for "accidentally" dropping on the board where it is likely to upset most if not all of the pieces.
Favorite strategy: Generally, if I suspect the player might be an older person or have health problems, I try to take as long as I possibly can with each move in the hopes that my opponent will simply drop dead. Recent games where this strategy has paid off include board #1771988 , board #1740994 , board #1740993 , board #1729309 , board #1729308 , board #1727397 and my personal favorite, board #1727710 .
Favorite Xena episode: I guess the one that sticks out in my mind right now is the one where the bad guy's running away and she grabs a bunch of arrows and she uses the harp from earlier in the episode to shoot all the arrows at the guy at the same time and pins him to the wall... that was pretty cool.
Favorite opening: Frankenstein-Dracula (also favorite movie)

Finally, one last note about Eternal Rivals: Now that we have so many my administration is becoming a little complicated, so please remember, every time you crush an Eternal Rival Team Captain in an (un)friendly match, please save your receipts. Every receipt can be redeemed for 10 Anything Points on Ebay, but I do need the receipts. Harassing messages to Eternal Rival Team Captains are worth 1 Anything Point each.

yours, etc. TEAM COACH srpen

P-P-P-Pick up a penguin

Message:
It's hard learning to play chess in Antarctica - only 6 months light per year, the board has 64 white squares, plenty of penguins to use as pawns but will they do what you tell them?!!!

It's testament to my determination that I won the under-3ft Antarctica all-play-all tournament - new opponents were being born and learning to play before the first round was completed due to using sun dials as time controls, so I had to "accidentally" leak out the location of the event to a rather hungry group of killer whales, reducing the field by 50%.

As a result of my win, the penguins gave me the title "Emperor" and a year's supply of fish; thankfully I'm not going to run out of freezer space anytime soon.

Thanks to global warming, I am due to start a world tour next year on the next ice shelf that breaks off - I'll see you all soon.

but then again, it matter not if you win or lose, what matters is if i win or lose, or bla bla bla as the saying goes :) anyway i thank thee all for listening to my countless ramblings.

That's funny... odonata told me he called it "The Austrian Strudel-Dude's Austerlitz Opening". I suggest we combine the names, and maybe have a vote, seeing how this has become such an issue. How about "The Austrian Strudel Counter-Blitz"? If anyone can come up with better name for this "illustrious" opening please let me know...it's all I think about. CAPTAIN xena

7 Things You Never Knew About The Captain

Message:
Well, I guess it won't be too much longer before this particular thread draws to a close and I will, against my better judgement, be starting a new one...the working title is 'The Pawn Stars #3: From Dusk Till Pawn'. Anyway I thought it was about time to regale you with some little known factoids about myself...just in case anyone is interested. So what better way to divulge the mysterious workings of my female brain than to tell you "a few of my favourite things" ( Julie Andrews not included) and here they are, in no particular order...

1.Favourite colour: Black With Tiny Little Bits Of Purple.

2.Favourite movies: Anything without Meg Ryan in it ...especially 'Hellraiser', 'Evil Dead' and 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'.

3.Favourite "actor": Vin Diesel.

4.Favourite Actual Country and Western Song Title: 'If I Had shot You When I Wanted To I'd Be Out By Now'

5.Favourite Star Trek episode: "The Trouble With Tribbles'

6. Favourite Chess opening: This is a toss-up between 'The Gotcha' (1.d4c5 2.d5nf6 3.nf3 c4) and 'The Monkey's Bum' (1.e4 g6 2.Bc4Bg73.Qf3 )

7. Favourite Chess Book: 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess' ( 2nd edition )

There...if you want to know anything else you'll have to buy my autobiography. :-)

Well if you send me $29.95 (Aus), like everyone else, I might. The Deluxe Autographed copy "From Warrior Princess to Pawn Star" usually retails at $49.95 (Aus) and includes my famous recipe for Parsnip Bourbon. For those who order before the end of July I'll also throw in copy of "The Stupidest Belgian Country & Western Songs of All Time" ( retails $1.95 Aus) plus a set of fairly blunt steak knives. What more could you ask for?

Xena's real intentions...

Message:
Well Xena, I just spent all my money on 3 things: a zebra, a chicken and a catapult. You understand that a succesful team like mine needs a mascotte, so a real Flying Zebra has been built...
Furthermore we sincerely doubt that there is such a thing as a Xena's Autobiography... We more or less suspect that you lack about some 50 aussie$ (whathever that may be worth), to buy you a ticket to fly over to the most lovely place in the world: Antwerp in Belgium.

Is that right? If if it only cost $50 bucks to get to Antwerp it must be a hell of a tourist attraction. BTW what do you need the chicken for...is it a back-up team member?

I guess, in case they're ever challenged by an egg, they could at least settle *that* old question.

Ok... so it's agreed no one wants to go to, or even fly over Antwerp, unless they are paid AT LEAST 50 bucks...so glad that's settled. The Chicken and Egg Confrontation should also be an eye-opener. Looking forward to that one.
Next subject please so we can finish this thread and start the new one.
