New event planned

Message:
myself and icarntwrite have been speaking about hte Defenders of the last pawn and how it works on all the defernt levels.. We came to the conculsion that the event will not go on any longer due to lack of participents and other factors..

so we sat there on a very late friday night and icarntwrite came up with a fantastic idea i will explain the idea to you guys...

First we find around 5 top players in our team who are willing to particpate in the event.. then the rest of the team who wish to try and beat them then get together in the team forum where they will all discuss the next best move and once they have decided the best move it is taken.. then the top player makes his move and it goes on like that etc...

thus means there will be 5 games to have a debate on in which i will create 5 different topic forums for each one.. maybe the topic should be password protected so that the defender can not see the strategy...

so basicly its defender Vs the whole team.. each defender will play best out of three with the team....

this will help bring us all together as a team and have some fun... If the team wins best out of three with the defender, there will be a vote on the team member who has helped the most and i will create an image/award to go next to your name in the forum... and there will be a section dedicated on the forum to the winner.. so this means if the team wins all the defenders then there will be 5 chances to win... if the defender wins then they will get a spcecial award and section in the forum....

I hope you enjoy the idea.. and want to participate.. please msg me if you want to participate as either a defender or play against the defender...

Hi team i just want to make a few notes here, the skipper must stay i was responsable for mercury_white taking up the this role when crops&co disbanded i convinced him he would be the best one for that job as time has gone by it has been proved what a wise choice that was. I know i am one of the many silent members of this team more silent then the early days of the English defence its mainly because of the very tough team matches i play it takes me a while to work the very best moves that i can make in any given situation. I made a decision a couple of months ago to scale down the number of games i play i am now playing 15 down from 45 that should help my burn-out problem?.

I think the idea of 'ganging up' on our best players sounds like fun! I'm certainly up for that. (I've come as close as I am ever likely to get to a result against parrvert, it's been a great game so far, and it's not over yet!)
Sorry I haven't drummed up any new games for you chaps, I would stay behind at work tonight and do it but I've got a stinking cold (honest! I had it all weekend, very nice...) I must away to my bed.
New games tomorrow, just give me a loud shout and I'll include you in as many as you want...

Obviously his illness is more serious than he thinks!

About the team event, it sounds good but may I suggest we try to walk before we run and start off with just one game.

There was a similar event quite a while ago: Gameknot v Alex Brunetti

It was interesting to see how some fairly strong players saw the game but sadly it didn't get too far into the middle game and was never completed.

Message:
sorry for not updating you guys on developments with the event..

Currently icantwrite is working on some guidlines for the event and we are still discussing the event trying to trim the edges..

funny you should say that parrvert i have spoken to archiebold on the subject and then discussed it with icantwrite and we decided a few days ago that we will be trialing the event... we have decided to run two games to begin with and see how that goes.. the forum is set up on our forum site, and currently the team headquarters are password protected.. we dont know the date the event will start but i do hope we can have something by friday... i am well ready for a good fight

on the regards as who will be the two defenders too make things fair myself and icantwrite decided to make it the first lot who contacted me when i announced the event... if the event takes off then their will be more places for defenders.. the two that replied first are grobler and archbold64.. i will be contacted these guys see if they still want in..

i would like to thank icantwrite for this great idea..

26th May Update

Message:
Good evening chaps!

I have (sort of) recovered from my cold, and am hopefully recovering a little of my ability to actually win a game or two! Recently I nabbed a couple of wins in 11 and 8 moves, though this could be due to coincidental errors by my opponents. Don't worry parrvert I won't let it go to my head, but it is nice to see my personal score just beginning to rise from the depths after soooo long.

I am thinking of modifying the little mesage at thetop of our team page, inserting a couple of polite clauses requesting that new members wishing to apply
a) have completed a certain number of games (50?)
b) have no history of multiple time-outs
Any thoughts on these? I don't want to get too officious about it, but I read your opinions and I think this is the least I should do to begin with...

I can't wait to have a go at our two Defencive Strongholders, thanks to gibster19 and icantwrite for their continuing work on the idea...

Some challenges to mention now, beginning with three that have become games since late last week;

1) An 8 player challenge from the HIGHWIND TEAM;
stevex
sacrifice
izs26
icantwrite
niloc
starkberlin
vulcan72
knighthawk

2) A 4 player challenge from the PAWN STARS;
anathema
rookgambit
markas
izs26

3) Another 4 player challenge, this from the KINGS OF THE BOARD;
mercury_whyte
icantwrite
starkberlin
vulcan72

Three challenges have been sent out this evening, I hope at least some will be accepted by tomorrow;

4) A 3 player challenge to the RUSSIAN TIME team;
marktb1961
stellaknight
icantwrite

5) a 4 player challenge to the GLOBAL BOUNTY HUNTERS;
hareques
tigran
doughnut17
mercury_whyte

6) A 3 player challenge to the BLACK KNIGHTS;
tigran
illegal_logic
stanc

Apologies to other English Defenders who are getting a bit low on games (therealjimfriar, lesvillain and others) it is sometimes difficult to get a good match while challenging. Several team members are unavailable as well of course. Anyone wanting more games just give the call!
Too many? Tell me and I'll try not to forget...

Positive score here I come!!

We haven't forgotten the Cod War, COME ON ENGLAND!

3rd June Update

Message:
Hi there team!

I haven't posted since last week but here I am again after another round of attempted challenges...

I'm sure the team will be happy to wait a bit longer for details of the new team event icantwrite, we are looking forward to it.

Two new players have joined us this evening, I am happy to welcome scorbin and logisticsman onboard, they both sent me messages of introduction and they both seem like hardworking players willing to give it a go for the flag. I know you'll all make them feel at home here...

Some challenges, outstanding or already accepted:

1) BELGIAN LIONS (outstanding)
tkdman
archbold64
tigran
philbevan

2) BLACK KNIGHTS (accepted)
scorbin
logisticsman
starkberlin

3) WHITE KNIGHTS (outstanding)
scorbin
stanc
logisticsman

4) PROCESS, NOT SUBSTANCE (outstanding)
archbold64
therealjimfriar
stevex

There were several others but they were declined so I won't take up space with them here. Anyone hungry for more games give me a shout! We're just emerging from a bit of a low right now but I think with the help of our patriotic new blood we can forge ahead in the summer...

Keep battling to the end chaps!! Best regards and respects to all of you...

Message:
Implying that us Bolton lads know nowt about football. I'll let you know that I've staked £10 on Jay Jay Okocha being the leading goalscorer in Euro 2004. You'll be dead choked when I win, particularly as I got amazingly good odds on it from my Bookies.

Try a flutter on Sweden, I know they are not much fancied at 25-1 but they probably have the best pair of strikers at Euro 2004 (Larssen and Ibrahamovitch)and are well organised defensively, they could prove to be the shock team at Euro 2004.......and represent more attractive odds than England at 7-1.

Thats the secret to scoring well at Fantasy footy...so who knows which Italian defender will definately play ? Who are the midfield certs for Spain/Port ? What about an unpronouncable Croat who sleeps with the manager and is a sure fire starter ? Who takes the penalties ?

I reckon Sweden will do well. They'll get through the group, then will probably have Holland or Germany in the quarters (if they're unlucky they'll get the Czechs) Germany are poor, and Holland won't go more than two weeks without everyone falling out so Sweden could make it to the semis.
Larsson and Ibrahimovic could be really dangerous, but if things aren't going his way Ibrahimovic is likely to start sulking.

For Italy, Christian Panucci is fit again so will almost certainly be him, Zambrotta, Cannavaro and Nesta in the back four.

I'm not sure who will play in midfield for Portugal, but I'd be surprised to see Figo on the bench.

Judging by who played in the qualifiers, Baraja and Etxeberria will be in the Spanish midfield.

I reckon Jan Koller (the manager said he will always start) and Michael Ballack will get some goals, bearing in mind that they'll both play against Latvia.

10th June Update

Message:
Good evening chaps!

We have suffered a few defeats to time-outs in the last few days, but this is not the only reason for our score slipping. A number of games happen to have been lost fair and square by coincidence at roughly the same time. Those involved in the time-out incidents have (except one) contacted me to explain and apologise and I am content to let the matter rest there for now. Several English Defenders have been getting their wins in recently as well, so I am very happy to mention the following names in despatches;
starkberlin five straight wins! Well played sir!
markas a very decent run recently and rapidly climbing the table...
archbold64 and therealjimfriar, undefeated in at least their last five games...
I'm not intending to slight anyone going through a tough patch at the moment, I know sometimes I land you chaps with very difficult games (ie: tkdman, about to take on the mighty cyrano) but don't lose heart, I hope we can all look up to these chaps and congratulate them on their current success...

Some challenge news for this evening. Six challenges were sent out, only one actually declined. Here is a brief summary;

1) Challenge to team ROMANIA:
tkdman
therealjimfriar
bookie
parrvert

2) Challenge to team YESHUA'S ARMY:
markas
mercury_whyte
lesvillain
logisticsman
niloc

3) Challenge to ITALIANS DO IT BETTER:
tkdman
bookie
hareques

4) Challenge to ONLY ON A SUNDAY:
markas
mercury_whyte

5) Challenge to JUST DO IT!:
markas
scorbin
stellaknight

We also received a 3 player challenge from the STONE CUTTERS team, but though I accepted it I cannot remember who I selected! Sorry chaps, but you'll know who you are...

That's all for now. I'd just like to say I want to see a performance to be proud of from our boys on Sunday. The result is not as important as the spirit we show, especially if we end up really up against it. No petulence or temper tantrums. I want to see men of character out there...
COME ON ENGLAND!! Make us all proud of you again.

I am lucky cos I've got two horses running in the Euro 2004 Steeplechase. England...of course, cos I'm English. But I am also married into a Czech family and my wife and I have a house in the heart of Moravia, so of course I can always cheer for the Czech Republic should my English heroes falter by the wayside........

No pressure at all on the Czechs to win, so that may well work in their favour whilst the likes of Portugal, Spain, Italy and England labour under the heavy mantle of being favourites.

Still think a £10 flutter on Sweden might be a fair bet. Grobler promised me that West Ham would be blowing bubbles in the Premiership next season, so I reckon his record as a pundit is fatally flawed !!!
:0)

PS Why don't you like Henrik Larsson ? I think he is a brilliant striker, probably one of the best that has ever performed in Britain. I wouldn't 'arf like Bolton to sign him !!!

The secret of my success...

Message:
Nothing very exciting I am afraid, I believe it to be a combination of factors;

1) I am no longer making 'quick' moves just because I am bored.

2) I have had some luck lately, 4 time-out wins in the last week or so...

3) I am becomming a little more familiar with the better known openings, and what to do after the 4th/5th move. I find this is very helpful in building a successful middle game. Sounds obvious I know, but I can feel the benefits.

4) I am learning a bit about when to swap pieces to weaken my opponent's position and when not to. I am trying my best to think about the best positions for my pieces three or four moves hence rather than one or two. I am beginning to learn a few simple combinations.

5) I have dared to sacrifice pieces in a number of aggressive King's side attacks and so far I have got away with it more often than not...

6) I will admit I have slowed the pace of a few games in which I am not doing so well - partly to salvage something by the closest study before each move - though the effect may be to have wins rolling in a little quicker than defeats...

7) Position of the planets etc. A quick study of my graph will show a few roller-coaster variations in my rating over the previous couple of years. My powers of concentration seem to ebb and flow in time to some celestial rhythm. At the moment I am happy to be 'on the up'.

8) Looking twice before playing the 'obvious' move or the move my opponent seems to be inviting me to make. Being as patient as I can.

9) Plain old luck - I have managed to avoid any real clangers for a week or two - it's good for your general confidence if you can do that.

10) A little reading up on the basics (Copies of 'The Amateur's Mind' and 'The Complete Book of Chess Strategy' which I bought a long time ago).

I realise this is all so vague as to be of little use to anyone else, but gradually I'm finding it works for me. I am still losing games - on average about one in five or six - but I am doing my best to learn from these defeats rather than try to forget them.
I did recently begin a very strange team game against a player named hollowone, who carried out what he refererred to as the 'Haloween attack', reducing my position to tatters in about 12 moves. I have never seen anything like it, but do any of you chaps knowabout this one and how to defend against it? I wouldn't make such a hash of it a second time I hope, but I would like to know more...

I am glad I'm making a good contribution to our score at the moment, I don't know how much further I can go as I realise my next opponents will be playing at a level I have never experienced. I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing now - going slowly and patiently - and see where that takes me...

Regards for now, mercury_whyte

I realise this is the holiday season and many of you are jetting off to warmer climes, but anyone who wants more games please just holler! I will include you in my next round of challenges...
I don't think anything has come of gibster19's idea of pitting a committee of us against one of our best players but I still like the idea, so if anyone else has a set of parameters to suggest maybe we can still get some agreement and set it up?
I'll post again soon, happy holidays to those of you who are on 'em, I hope the exams didn't get anyone down too much (I passed a fair few myself, but they never did me any good).
Peckers up chaps! Best regards for now...

Well done skipper

Message:
You're putting in a great performance skipper. Just what England needs right now.
I believe Mick Adams is doing well in Libya too in the FIDE World Championship.
Regards everyone

Adams sitting pretty

Message:
Adams has successfully made it to the Final, he now gains an extra day's rest whilst the other two Semi Finalists slug it out in Rapid play.

Adams had a very tricky position in Semi Final game 3 but surprisingly, Akopian, with good chances of a win, offered a DRAW !!! Perhaps he was influenced by his time pressure, but even so, a lucky escape for Adams. He made no mistake in game 4 and drew easily to go through to the Final.

If he wins, Adams will become Englands first ever World Champion at Chess !!!

C'mon ADAMS !!!!!!!

I don't count Howard Staunton as being a World Champion although for a brief time he did become the world's strongest player. Subesquently Morphy would have made mincemeat of him had Staunton dared to play him !!

Adams

Message:
St George and England !!!.......and MICHAEL ADAMS !!!!

Michael just HAS ro win.....if for no other reason that I can neither spell nor pronounce his opponents name nor even have any idea where Uzbekistan is.

Forget England and Football, even forget the cricket and rugby, in particular forget Tim Henman. THIS is the BIG ONE, Michael Adams for World Championship Chess glory !!!!

Should it go to Rapid play, then fear not, Michael Adams is the World's best Blitz player while his opponent is only ranked 24 in the world
