To answer your question gibster19, we have two internal tournaments running at the moment, both organised and administrated by parrvert, one of our team's 'original' handfull of members. The first tournament involved about nine of us, the second a rather larger number. The trouble is, due to my reckless acceptance of every English chess player who wants to join us, The English Defence continues to expand, so newer members arrive during 'mid-tournament' when it would be difficult to include them... Making progress by degrees towards proper internet connection again, I'll get there in the end. I'd like to see it back the way it was, for what it's worth. I think it is no longer organised in a comptetitive format, which seems very strange. All teams start with rating 1200. The rating system is based on a premise that a difference of 400 points gives the team 99% chance to win the game. The first 20 games are used to establish team rating. During that time, team rating will be computed as an average of the ratings of all opposing teams, +400 if in case of a win, -400 in case of a loss, the same in case of a draw. After 20 games, team gains 16 points in case of a game won against a team with rating more than 400 points above, 8 points in case of a game won against a team with rating within 400 points, and team gains 1 point in case of a game won against a team with rating more than 400 points below. Team loses 16 points in case of a game lost against a team with rating more than 400 points below, team loses 8 points in case of a game lost against a team with rating within 400 points, and team loses 1 point in case of a game lost against a team with rating more than 400 points above. Team won't lose or gain any points in case of a drawn game, unless tying a game against a team with rating more than 400 points above, in which case team gains 8 points. |

To become better chess players.. i have come up with a competition which i have had run past the captain and is in full support of. The competition is as follows. I find 3 - 5 highly rated players from the team and they become the defenders. each one of the defenders then plays one game against a person from the group. will be decided by first come first serve ( a list will be drawn up). the aim is to see how long the defenders can go without loosing. this creates a challenge for the defenders see how long they can go unbeaten... i will draw up a league as well in the group site on msn for this.. Hopefuly many players will learn from playing you and have fun trying to be the person who won the defenders.. once a defender has had enough the person who has won the most then gets promoted to a defender... what do you think? We have had no incoming challenges for at least 10 days now, but I will keep sending them out, until everyone is as busy as they wish to be! A couple of players have left the team recently, I particularly regret losing tonyh as he has been with us for a very long time. If anyone is thinking of leaving because they are unhappy about anything within the team, please let me know what it is before you go, I may be able to put it right! I know that I am not online as much as I used to be, my internet connection problems have become long-term I'm afraid, I only have access from work for the forseable future and my working days are busier than ever... I very much regret not being able to devote as much time to you chaps as I used to, and I am thankful for the efforts of parrvert, gibster19 and everyone else who devotes time and effort to our venture. I know our score has been slipping a bit lately, possibly because I have been accepting fairly tough challenges. Maybe I should decline more than I do, but it is a difficult balance to strike, tough games against the desire to keep everyone busy... If we seem to be losing our way it is mostly my responsibility. Maybe I should contact everyone, see who is still enthusiastic? Tighten the ship a little, remove a few 'current' members who have dissapeared from GK, trim things back, do a bit of spring cleaning? Any ideas or thoughts about ways to freshen things up a little, I would be more than happy to consider them. Contact me here or privately if you wish... I'm right out of team games at the moment but I'll take some just as soon as you can find them for me.... I'm sure we all appreciate your efforts as much as I do, which is a lot. I personally don't set a lot of store by team scores, which are really just a reflection of the relative strengths of the chosen opponents. I play here for fun and to try and improve my game. If gameknot wants a team competition where team scores truly reflect team quality/ability then teams should be selected as in normal chess competitions - choose the best players from each team. Im not saying I want this to happen - but if team scores are to mean very much then it's the only realistic way to do it. |

Teams are springing up all over the place nowadays, with no real reason to operate. So many teams slip into negitive scores and attitudes within the first 3 months of being created. True teams are those who can say WE WILL NOT ROLL OVER AND DIE. This team is made up of all sorts of people from different demographic areas, age groups and ratings. One thing that links us together is that we are ENGLISH. we dont have to over come barriers such as, language differences, time differences or any other problem mulity national teams come accross. In difficult times like this when our captain is in need of help, is for us all to pull together. many people in life at the first sign of trouble abandon ship, leave and find fresher pastures. is this the right thing to do NO. who can say in thier life they have not gone through a bad patch or a rough patch.. this is a team rough patch but the sun will shine again. I ask you why do people run before they talk.. this team has many options in the way of talking. we have this board the msn board and private msgs. if you have a problem tell the group or captain. ... Talk about it.. that way the problem could be solved. answer me this how would a blind person know he was white unless someone told him he was white.. We must as a team stick together through this tough time and most of all Talk to each other if we have problems.. otherwise this ship will sink.. and it will go down faster than the titanic. and not because of our captains fault but through our own faults.. |
